Francisco José de Goya was a Spanish painter of the late 18th and early 19th century. After his time as a court painter, during which he also created religious frescoes and altarpieces, he withdrew from the courtly environment and turned to creating prints that dealt with the political and social circumstances of his time. De Goya’s paintings have a fascinating forcefulness that never lets go of the viewer. Printed on canvas, they have a particularly authentic effect.
