Vilhelm Hammershøi was a Danish painter of the 19th century and, as a representative of symbolism, was known above all for his meaningful paintings. His interior and landscape paintings appear bare and puristic, his architectural depictions often deserted and gloomy. Like no other, Hammershøi thus creates a feeling of quiet melancholy that is inevitably transmitted to the viewer. Especially on canvas, the muted colours of his works create a haunting atmosphere.
