Carl Holsøe was a Danish painter who studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and at the Free Art School under the Skagen painter Peder Severin Krøyer. For his work, he mainly took the interior depictions of the Dutch painters of the 17th-century as a model. Like his friend Vilhelm Hammershøi, Holsøe’s focus was also predominantly on interior painting. However, he also painted portraits, still lifes and landscapes. Holsøe’s works are particularly impressive as canvas prints or gallery prints.
